Pro Tips

Keeping pumpkins looking fresh and festive throughout the fall season is key, especially for Pumpkin Porch Company! Here are some of our pro tips to help your pumpkins last longer.

1. Location, Location, Location: Keep them cool and dry.

  • We place pumpkins out of direct sunlight whenever possible — shade helps prevent soft spots.

  • We avoid placing them directly on wet surfaces or grass. Instead, we sit them on hay bales, wood, bricks, or mats to allow airflow underneath.

2. We clean before we style

  • We wash pumpkins with a mild bleach solution to kill surface bacteria and mold spores.

  • We let them dry completely before placing.

  • We seal and protect the surface of the pumpkin with a light oil which locks in moisture and gives a healthy, slightly shiny appearance.

3. If you are carving any of the pumpkins don't carve them until the last minute.

  • Uncarved pumpkins can last 4–8 weeks, while carved pumpkins may only last 3–7 days, especially in warm climates.

4. Watch for Rot

  • Regularly check for soft spots, mold, or signs of rot.

  • If one pumpkin starts going bad, remove it ASAP to protect the others.

5. Elevate for Airflow

  • Elevating pumpkins slightly allows air to circulate underneath, reducing moisture buildup and rot.
